Collection guide

Cyanotype prints show plants as pale shapes on deep blue, in the style of a classic sun print. Ours are cyanotype style designs of ginkgo, poppy, tulip and bamboo on premium matte paper.

A cyanotype is one of the oldest ways of making a photograph. Plants were laid on paper coated with iron salts and left in the sun; where the leaves blocked the light the paper stayed pale, and the rest turned a deep Prussian blue. The result, a photogram, is a ghostly white silhouette of the plant, and botanists used the method for some of the earliest plant records.

Our cyanotype style prints recreate that look. They are not chemical sun prints: each design is printed on premium matte paper, so every copy has the same deep blue and crisp pale shapes. Choose from classic Prussian blue, darker deep indigo or a brighter cyanotype blue, with ginkgo, poppy, cherry blossom, eucalyptus, olive branch, tulip, cosmos, bamboo and pampas grass.

Blue and white is easy to live with. Cyanotype art suits coastal rooms, studies, kitchens and hallways, and looks fresh against white or pale grey walls. Hang two or three plants in the same blue as a set, or mix them with navy and black and white prints.

Questions about Cyanotype Prints

What is a cyanotype print?

A cyanotype is a sun print: plants laid on light sensitive paper leave white silhouettes on a deep Prussian blue ground. Our cyanotype prints recreate that look in a cyanotype style, printed on premium matte paper rather than exposed in the sun.

What is the difference between a cyanotype and a photogram?

A photogram is any image made by placing objects straight onto light sensitive paper, with no camera. A cyanotype is a photogram made with the blue cyanotype process, which is why the classic look is white plants on deep blue.

What sizes are available?

Most prints come in sizes from A4 (21 x 29.7cm) up to A0 (84.1 x 118.9cm), plus square sizes. A4 and A3 are popular gift sizes and start from £16.

Can I send it straight to them as a gift?

Yes. Tick "Mark as gift" in the basket and we leave the invoice out, so you can send the print straight to them.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. Our wall art gift card lets them choose their own print and size, and it is delivered by email, so it is perfect for last-minute gifts.

How long does delivery take?

Every print is made to order and usually dispatched within 1 to 2 days. UK orders typically arrive in 3 to 6 days, so for Christmas we recommend ordering by early December.
